The practice of criminalising the religious beliefs of others through apostasy and blasphemy laws violates both the fundamental teachings of Islam and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which enshrines the right to freedom of religion, belief and thought for all people. According to Muslims for Progressive Values, the eradication of apostasy and blasphemy laws in Muslim societies cannot be achieved until the historical, religious and political context of their origins is understood.
