56th Session of the Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold its fifty-sixth regular session from 18 June to 12 July 2024 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

Background

The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year. It meets at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).

The Human Rights Council holds no fewer than three regular sessions a year, for a total of at least ten weeks. They take place in February-March, June-July and September-October. Sessions can be three, four or five weeks long, depending on the programme of work.
